- Abstract
- In 1996, a study was undertaken at the University of Arkansas Libraries to evaluate the practice of front-end authority work for monographs copy cataloging. A sample of 283 name headings originating from Library of Congress, OCLC "Enhance" member, and general member copy was examined, and analysis revealed that 47.3 percent of headings correctly matched authority records already present in the library's local file. Another 41.3 percent exactly matched records in the OCLC authority file. These findings prompted the library to cease checking name headings at the point of cataloging. However, the level of inaccuracies present, combined with the value of authority records for cross-reference and note information, ensured that the Database Maintenance Unit would continue to review local headings reports and perform needed authority work.

- Abstract
- The impetus for a large-scale study on subject heading understanding was a recommendation of the Library of Congress (LC) Subject Subdivisions Conference that suggested standardizing the order of subject subdivisions for the purpose of simplifying subject cataloging. This paper focuses on unexpected large-scale study findings about multiple meanings for subdivided subject headings and the effects that changes of meaning for different orders of subdivisions had on the meanings that end users and librarians provided to subdivided subject headings. Findings about changes of meaning in subdivided subject headings did not dissuade the authors regarding their recommendation that the library community adopt a standard order of subdivisions. The authors also give suggestions for additional studies of subject heading understanding that build on this one.

- Abstract
- This short guide is intended to help librarians and OPAC system designers to make decisions about the design of displays of more than one subject heading. The authors stress that they offer guidance rather than standards or prescriptions; their clear prose is cautious and even the number of recommendations is limited. A 12-page introduction contrasts the "structural approach" and "strict alphabetical approach" to filing, showing examples and stating arguments for each. 7 chapters cover display of subdivisions, inverted headings, display of qualified headings, arrangement of numerical headings, display of subjects interfiled with names and titles, punctuation and messages to the user. Within each chapter, questions involving choices between two or more approaches are followed by brief statements of current practice (LC rules, ALA rules, and systems in existing OPACs) extensive examples demonstrating such choices, and arguments for and against each. The authors warn against ever assuming that the user knows the needed subject headings, and acknowledge that the best OPAC design often depends on the setting and on the user's understanding of the system. Although the topic may be beyond the purview of the authoring committee, the discussion here makes one yearn for interactive OPACs that can analyze the user's needs and provide appropriate guidance to whatever system is adopted

- Abstract
- This paper recognizes the limitations of the existing file of Library of Congress authority records for subject heading assignment and validation. It makes recommendations for a new machine-readable file of authority records for topical subdivisions and for enhancements to the existing subject authority file. The recommended changes qould enable online systems to assist in subject heading formulation and verify, with limited assistance by human intermediaries, the individual components of subdivided headings. A study of subdivided subject headings in a large bibliographic database forms the basis of the recommendations

- Abstract
- Libraries exist to make information available to the entire community in an unbiased way. In this paper I will argure that in Aboriginal Studies, libraries are rigidly preserving the status quo, or, in other words, perpetuating the dominant paradigm, by which I mean the ethnocentric attitude that the white, modern, male-dominated society is inherently superior to any other. I shall look critically at the application of subject headings in the area of Aboriginal Studies and the effect they have of sanitising information so as not to disturb certain beliefs

- Abstract
- In an attempt to improve access to music materials, a project to create a preliminary music thesaurus - a tool by which terms and their relationships can be displayed, analyzed and evaluated - was initiated. ARIS provides significant enhancements for searching terms, tracking relationships among headings, and gaining an overview of music vocabulary in LCSH

- Abstract
- Examines concepts of language and power in relation to the history of the Australian aboriginal people. Libraries and abstracting and indexing services play an important role in controlling and interpreting history by the selction of articles, choice of language, e.g. thesauri, to provide access points and the application of subject headings. Uses the Australian Public Affairs Information Service (APAIS) subject headings and the APIS thesaurus (1990) to illustrate this process

- Abstract
- The Dynix system's subject authority control (release 112) is examined using the University of Dayton's implementation as an example. Although capable of controlling headings and of displaying references, required procedures are necessarily cumbersome. Subdivisioins in headings prove to be a major factor in generating significant amounts of work. The structure of the system and its impact on the control process are also discussed.

- Describes the OCLC Fiction Project from the point of view of a cataloguer participating in it. The project, which has been in existence since 1991, involves adding subject headings to catalogue records on the OCLC union catalogue for individual works of fiction. Also considers a number of issues involving in applying these headings to works (such as genre definitions, the nature of fiction, intertextuality, and the cataloguer's subjectivity)

- Abstract
- Subject headings and classification numbers in catalogue records for books on Chicano literature are surveyed. Although LCSH containing the words 'Mexican American(s)' appear in 58% of the records for collections and secondary works, they appear in only 39% of the records of works for individual authors. But these subject headings appear in a higher percentage of the records for both groups of books than do Bilindex, LoC classification numbers, and DDC numbers that associate these books with Mexican-American literature. Subject cataloguing of the works of individual authors is especially problematic
