    Abstract
Libraries using the LCSH can increase the effectiveness of their subject access. This can be accomplished through one of four methods for applying an increased number of headings: the addition of subject headings in situations where none have been supplied by LC; the use of pattern secondary headings; the use of major + minor techniques; and the use of minor + major techniques. Each of these methods will provide additional subject access to supplement that produced by the Library of Congress

    Abstract
Investigates the inadequacy of the 10th ed. of LCSH regarding Islamic subject headings and compares it with some of the schemes available in Arabic. Whilst LCSH is not entirely inadequate, in some subjects related to Islam there is room for improvement and expansion. The following subjects are covered in the comparison: Islam as a general heading, Quran, the Prophet Muhammad, Hadith, islamic law, prayer, and Muslim pilgrims and pilgrimages

    Abstract
Finding needed environmental information by the library users creates some difficulties. This paper evaluates Library of Congress subject headings related to a broad range of environmental topics. The evaluation is limited to entries found in the subject file of the WLN database. The article also presents recommendations and solutions to improve access to "green information." Abstract
Since the 1950s the Library of the Université Laval in Quebec has devoted a great deal of effort to its subject headings list, the Répertoire de vedettes-matière (RVM), an adaptation of LCSH. Sources from specialised thesauri such as MeSH and Art and Architecture (AAT) supplement the headings. Provides a brief historical overview of the RVM and describes the methodology for integrating AAT descriptions into RVM

    Abstract
Attention is drawn to the inadequacies of the existing classification schemes as pointed out by individuals and groups concerned with classification research. The article is based on an earlier study by the author, which identified and arranged in a filiatory way the main concepts of sociology and determined their relative significance as headings in a classification scheme. The sociology schedule in the DDC was examined on the basis of 9 evaluation criteria, as e.g. arrangement of major categories, provision for main concepts, use of phrased headings instead of individual key terms, and scattering of related concepts in the schedule. It was found that a large number of the main concepts of sociology are either not represented in the schedule or mentioned in the scope note only along with the main headings. A table shows 100 main concepts of sociology arranged and classified within 10 major categories or sections, and their provision in the DDC. The study suggests that the DDC needs serious reconsideration with regard to the main headings/categories provided as class headings, terminology used for the concepts, the filiatory structure adopted, and the representation of the main concepts of sociology

    Abstract
Many information professionals feel that the time is still far off when the WWW can offer the combined funtionality and content of traditional online and CD-ROM databases, but there have been a number of recent Web developments to reflect on. Describes the testing and launch by Ovid of its Java client which, in effect, allows access to its databases on the Web with full search functionality, and the initiative of Euromonitor in providing Web access to its whole collection of consumer research reports and its entire database of business sources. Also reviews the service of a newcomer to the information scene, Information Quest (IQ) founded by Dawson Holdings which has made an agreement with Infonautics to offer access to its Electric Library database thus adding over 1.000 reference, consumer and business publications to its Web based journal service

    Abstract
Examines some of the advanced tools, techniques, methods and standards related to the Internet and WWW which consist of hybrids of documents and software, called 'document program hybrids'. Early Internet systems were based on having documents on one side and software on the other, neatly separated, apart from one another and without much interaction, so that the static document can also exist without computers and networks. Documentation program hybrids blur this classical distinction and all components are integrated, interwoven and exist in synergy with each other. Illustrates the techniques with particular reference to practical examples, including: dara collections and dedicated software; advanced HTML features on the WWW, multimedia viewer and plug in software for Internet and WWW browsers; VRML; interaction through a Web server with other servers and with instruments; adaptive hypertext provided by the server; 'webbots' or 'knowbots' or 'searchbots' or 'metasearch engines' or intelligent software agents; Sun's Java; Microsoft's ActiveX; program scripts for HTML and Web browsers; cookies; and Internet push technology with Webcasting channels

    Abstract
A unique collection of historical material covering the lives and events of an English village between 1400 and 1750 has been made available via a WWW enabled information retrieval system. Since the expected readership of the documents ranges from school children to experienced researchers, providing this information in an easily accessible form has offered many challenges requiring tools to aid searching and browsing. The file structure of the document collection was replaced by an database, enabling query results to be presented on the fly. A Java interface displays each user's context in a form that allows for easy and intuitive relevance feedback

    Abstract
Presents an approach that integrates searching and browsing in a manner that improves both paradigms. When browsing is the primary task, it enables semantic content-based tailoring of Web maps in both the generation as well as the visualization phases. When search is the primary task, it enables contextualization of the results by augmenting them with the documents' neighbourhoods. This approach is embodied in WebCutter, a client-server system fully integrated with Web software. WebCutter consists of a map generator running off a standard Web server and a map visualization client implemented as a Java applet runalble from any standard Web browser and requiring no installation or external plug-in application. WebCutter is in beta stage and is in the process of being integrated into the Lotus Domino application product line

    Abstract
In this article, we describe and test a two-stage algorithm based on a lexical collocation technique which maps from the lexical clues contained in a document representation into a controlled vocabulary list of subject headings. Using a collection of 4.626 INSPEC documents, we create a 'dictionary' of associations between the lexical items contained in the titles, authors, and abstracts, and controlled vocabulary subject headings assigned to those records by human indexers using a likelihood ratio statistic as the measure of association. In the deployment stage, we use the dictiony to predict which of the controlled vocabulary subject headings best describe new documents when they are presented to the system. Our evaluation of this algorithm, in which we compare the automatically assigned subject headings to the subject headings assigned to the test documents by human catalogers, shows that we can obtain results comparable to, and consistent with, human cataloging. In effect we have cast this as a classic partial match information retrieval problem. We consider the problem to be one of 'retrieving' (or assigning) the most probably 'relevant' (or correct) controlled vocabulary subject headings to a document based on the clues contained in that document

    Abstract
Key problems of subject searches in online public access catalogs are that too much may be retrieved and that the display may be arranged in what appears to be an unintuitive and unhelpful manner. A study was undertaken on one large database to determine how often the display of a subject and its modifications and subdivisions extended over more than two screens and what the results on display would be of compressing geographic subdivisions and other modifications. The study then addressed the question of how often the display of a term and its subdivisions was interrupted by the appearance in the display of inverted headings, phrase headings, and headings with parenthetical qualifiers

    Abstract
Examines a method of converting assigned UDC numbers into subject headings. The method consists of 2 phases: a dictionary is created that maps UDC numbers to subject headings; and this dictionary is then mechanically applied to convert the bibliographic databases. Tests 15 different UDC classes and records translation success and problems encountered. Closely examines problems encountered in each part and describes 3 main types of UDC classes: the synthetic; the shallow enumerative; and the deep enumerative. Findings show that the time spent in the first phase is tolerable. Considers the initial question of translatability of the whole UDC in the light of the results
