    Abstract
The system is available both in print and online versions. Names a few new subject headings in areas like science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM). In this edition, there are a total of 1,600 new headings making it a total of 12,000+ preferred headings meant for subject access in small and medium sized libraries. This unprecedented increase of about 1,600 headings is mostly due the complete incorporation of the Canadian Sears last published independently in 2006. Also critically examines inconsistencies in a few headings. Concludes to say the new edition in resplendent, hard binding maintains its stellar reputation of a handy list of general subject headings both for applications and a teaching resource.

    Footnote
The didactic parts of the book are a collection of exercises, readings and resources constituting a "Teach yourself " chapter written by Alan Thomas, ending with the warning that "New challenges include how to devise multi-functional and usersensitive vocabularies, corporate taxonomies and ontologies, and how to apply the transformative technology to them." This is absolutely right, and there is a need for some good writing that would tackle these issues. Another chapter, by James Shearer, skilfully manages to compress a practical exercise in building a thesaurus into some twenty A5 size pages. The third chapter in this set, by Marianne Lykke Nielsen, contains extensive reviews of key issues and selected readings under eight headings from the concept of the thesaurus, through the various construction stages and ending with automatic construction techniques. . . . This is a useful and approachable book. It is a pity that the index is such a poor advertisement for vocabulary control and usefulness."

    Abstract
This article is an unpublished manuscript of a paper presented at the 17th Annual Mid-Year Meeting of the ASIS at Ann Arbor, Mich., May 15-18, 1988. It is the first recorded proposal for visual support of indexing. The system itself was built and developed at NASA in the Johnson space Center Image Archives from 1989 to 1992

    Abstract
Various shortcomings typically attend thesaural relationships: failure to support extended relevance relationships; lack of effort in identifying a common relational inventory across types of retrieval systems; limitation to binary relationships; inattention to relationships built into the meaning of lexical units. To counteract this failings, a preliminary inventory of relational structures underlying the ca. 1250 most frequently occuring English verbs is presented. The inventory is compact and corresponds to a combination of semantic role-based verb types as identified by Chafe (1970), and image schemata, as identified by Johnson (1987). The nature of hierarchical relationships among relational structures within the inventory is surveyed

    Abstract
A new design for the DDC allows for display of the schedules and indexes in a hypertextual browser which was originally designed for the more conventional thesaurus with BT-NT, RT and USE-UF relations. Features of the DDC which approxumate those relations and the presentation of the rich vocabulary found in the hierarchical structure, captions, index entries and notes are represented for the library user's perusal and choice before searching a library's holdings. By dragging and dropping parts from such a display into a search window, the search for bibliographic items can begin and revised painlessly. Information such as class numbers of subject headings for retrieved items can be dragged and dropped into the searchw indow of the Visual Dewey display window as it suits the user to review vocabulary or revise the search results. This seamless to-ing and fro-ing allows for a truly interactive and spontaneous search environment, with maximum assistance at point of need. 'File folders' exist for saving any Visual Dewey information, any retrieved items, etc.

    Abstract
Discussion of the results and consequences of the automation project named thesaurus/concordance project, carried out at the DUT Library. The aim of the project was, by making the subject headings and their corresponding classification codes machine readable, to produce periodically cumulative lists, classifies lists, lists per subject fields, alphabetical lists of inverted subheadings and geographical names with their corresponding main headings and notations

    Abstract
The history of the Library of Congress Subject Headings is traced, from its beginnings with the implementation of a dictionary catalog at the Library of Congress in 1898 to the present day. The author describes the most significant changes which have occurred in LCSH policies and practices during the 100-year period. Events noted near the end of the century indicate an increased willingness on the part of' the Library of Congress to involve the larger library community in the creation or revision of subject headings and other decision-making regarding the LCSH system. Finally, the author provides a summary of the other contributions to this collection of essays, a collection which celebrates the "centennial" of the world's most popular library subject heading language
