    Abstract
    A thourough understanding of current subject cataloging practice, especially Library of Congress practice, will assist librarians in making the best use of new and emerging technology to ease the task of constructing subject headings. To gain insight into the most current subject cataloging practices at the Library of Congress, a random sample of one thousand bibliographic records with one or more 6XX fields and Library of Congress card numbers assigned from 1988 to the present was drawn from the BOOKSM database. Library of Congress catalogers rely heavily on the system of free-floating subdivisions in the process of constructing subject headings. Attempts to improve the subject cataloging process must take into account this fundamental characteristic of the Library of Congress subject headings system

    Abstract
    In this article the evolution of LCSH concerning women from LCSH 8(1975) through LCSH 14(1991) is traced. Dramatic changes have taken place, including an explosion of occupational headings for women, the disappearance of sexist headings and cross-references, and a shift from a somewhat narrow and condescending view of women to a more balanced view that takes into account the variety of roles they play. However, subtler forms of gender bias remain in the headings and in the ways they are applied. The author enumerates these problem areas and suggests possible solutions, concluding with a discussion of the larger issues involved in attempts to root out bias in the catalog

    Abstract
    This article explains the concept of world view and shows how the world view of cataloguers influences the development and assignment of subject headings to works about other cultures and civilizations, using works from Classical literature and Ancient history as examples. Cataloguers are encouraged to evaluate the headings they assign to works in Classical literature and Ancient history in terms of the world views of Ancient Greece and Rome so that headings reflect the contents of the works they describe and give fuller expression to the diversity of thoughts and themes that characterize these ancient civilizations.

    Abstract
    The principle of specificity for subject headings provides a clear advantage to many researchers for the precision it brings to subject searching. However, for some researchers very specific subject headings hinder an efficient and comprehensive search. An appropriate broader heading, especially when made narrower in scope by the addition of subheadings, can benefit researchers by providing generic access to their topic. Assigning both specific and generic subject headings to a work would enhance the subject accessibility for the diverse approaches and research needs of different catalog users. However, it can be difficult for catalogers to assign broader terms consistently to different works and without consistency the gathering function of those terms may not be realized.

    Abstract
    In mid-1999, the University of Arkansas Libraries began loading MarciveGPO records into its Innovative Interfaces catalog. Pursuant to that activity, the Database Maintenance Unit examined five system-generated authority reports in order to evaluate the quality of Marcive headings and to determine whether future GPO records could be loaded into the catalog without further authority processing. Final results indicated that while the overall quality of Marcive headings was good, a significant percentage of headings that appeared on the authority reports required additional attention.

    Abstract
    Moving to a fully faceted syntax would resolve three problems facing Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH): 1. Inconsistent syntax rules; 2. Inability to create headings that are coextensive with the topic of a work; and 3. Lack of effective displays for long lists of subdivisions under a single subject heading in OPACs and similar electronic displays. The authors advocate a fully faceted syntax using the facets of a modern faceted library classification (The Bliss Bibliographic Classification, 2d ed.). They demonstrate how this might be accomplished so as to integrate the new syntax with existing headings.
