Abstract

Am 19. und 20. Juli 2010 richten das Institut für Informationsmanagement (IIM) der Fachhochschule Köln und die Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (DNB) im Rahmen der Projekte CrissCross und RESEDA die Fachtagung Concepts in Context - Cologne Conference on Interoperability and Semantics in Knowledge Organization aus. Die Tagung findet in der Fachhochschule Köln statt und widmet sich Fragen der Interoperabilität und semantischer Informationen in der Wissensorganisation. Die Konferenz bietet Experten, Anwendern und Interessierten die Möglichkeit, verschiedene Modelle und Strategien der Wissensorganisation zu diskutieren und sich über neue Entwicklungen im Bereich der Standardisierung und Implementierung solcher Modelle zu informieren und auszutauschen. Der erste Tag ist als Abschlussworkshop für das DFG-Projekt CrissCross konzipiert und bietet neben einem umfassenden Überblick über das Projekt auch weitere praktische Anwendungsbeispiele für semantische Interoperabilität und mögliche Szenarien für ihre Anwendung in Online-Katalogen und im Rahmen des Semantic Web. Eine vertiefte Auseinandersetzung mit neueren Entwicklungen im Bereich der Interoperabilität unterschiedlicher Begriffssysteme sowie mit zukunftsträchtigen Modellen der semantischen Wissensorganisation findet am zweiten Tag statt. Aktuelle thematische Schwerpunkte werden hier die Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) und die Functional Requirements for Subject Authority Data (FRSAD) sein. Zur Konferenz werden Informationsspezialisten aus mehreren Ländern erwartet.

Abstract

Elektronische Publikationen oder, weiter gefasst, digitale Ressourcen nehmen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb wie im gesellschaftlichen Leben allgemein einen zunehmend höheren Stellenwert ein. An Bibliotheken wie auch an Archive und Museen stellt die rasante Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet neue Anforderungen hinsichtlich der dauerhaften Bewahrung und Zugänglichkeit dieser digitalen Objekte. Das in der »scientific community« erarbeitete und digital publizierte Wissen muss auch unter den Bedingungen eines rasant stattfindenden Technologiewandels langfristig verfügbar gehalten werden, da der Wissenschaftsprozess eine regelmäßige Neubewertung älterer Wissensstände erfordert. Somit ist eine zufrieden stellende Lösung der Langzeitarchivierung eine wesentliche Bedingung der Konkurrenzfähigkeit des Bildungs- und Wissenschaftssystems und damit mittelbar auch der wirtschaftlichen Leistungsfähigkeit eines jeweiligen Landes. Wie in anderen Ländern" ist Langzeitarchivierung digitaler Objekte in den letzten Jahren ein wichtiges Thema in Deutschland geworden. Die Arbeit, die im Bereich von physischen Datenträgern geleistet wurde, vorgegeben durch den gesetzlichen Sammelauftrag Der Deutschen Bibliothek, hat deutlich werden lassen, dass Ähnliches für den ungleich größeren Bereich der Netzpublikationen wie e-books, e-Journals, elektronische Hochschulschriften oder thematische Websites (bzw. Online-Ressourcen) noch fehlte?' In Deutschland wurde das Thema zum ersten Mal 1995 in einem Positionspapier »Elektronische Publikationen« der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) aufgegriffen und als Aufgabenbereich der Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken benannt. In Anbetracht sowohl des Umfangs der Aufgabe als auch der föderalen Struktur Deutschlands mit der Verantwortlichkeit seiner Bundesländer für Wissenschaft und Kultur ist es folgerichtig, dass der Ansatz zu einer erfolgreichen Lösung dieser Probleme nur ein kooperativer sein kann. Aus der gemeinsamen Arbeit an konzeptionellen Fragen der künftigen Entwicklung digitaler Bibliotheken im Rahmen des vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) getragenen Projektes »digital library-konzepte« ist eine Initiativgruppe Langzeitarchivierung hervorgegangen, deren Arbeitsplan im Rahmen eines 6-monatigen Folgeprojekts im Jahre 2002 auf zwei Workshops ausgewählten Experten des Informationswesens zur Diskussion gestellt wurden. Diese »Initialzündung« für eine kooperative Lösung der Langzeitarchivierung digitaler Ressourcen resultierte in einem Papier mit Abschlussempfehlungen für zentrale Komponenten einer kooperativen digitalen Langzeiterhaltungsstrategie für Deutschland?' Seit dem 1. Juli 2003 wird diese Initiative fortgesetzt von dem Nachfolgeprojekt mit dem offiziellen Titel »Kompetenznetzwerk Langzeitarchivierung und Langzeitverfügbarkeit digitaler Ressourcen für Deutschland«, das von Mitte 2003 bis Mitte 2006 läuft und wiederum - als Teilprojekt des »Kompetenznetzwerks Neue Dienste, Standardisierung, Metadaten«-vom BMBF getragen wird." Da der offizielle Projekttitel wenig wiedererkennungsfreundlich ist, wurde als zusätzlicher Kurztitel für das Projekt das sprechende Akronym nestor gewählt, das aufgelöst für die englischsprachige und damit international verständliche Übersetzung des offiziellen Projekttitels steht: »NEtwork of Expertise in long-term STOrage of online Resources in Germany«. Zugleich symbolisiert der Name die Funktion des Kompetenznetzwerks als zentrale Beratungs-, Kontakt- und Serviceadresse in diesem Bereich. Die Namensähnlichkeit mit vergleichbar gelagerten Projekten wie ASTOR, das eine gemeinsame Speicherinfrastruktur schafft, die der Schweizerischen Landesbibliothek und dem Schweizerischen Bundesarchiv als gemeinsame technologische Basis für die Langzeitarchivierung elektronischer Dokumente dient, ist dabei nicht unwillkommen."

Abstract

Sears List of Subject Headings (Miller and McCarthy 2010), first published in 1923, is now in its 20th edition. Like most subject headings lists, apart from being a list of preferred (and non-preferred) headings, it also provides patterns, clear instructions, and examples for coining new subject headings not explicitly listed. Key headings form a vital part of the system of coining new headings. It is proposed that more key headings should be designated. Some candidate headings are described. One far-reaching provision seems to be the use of a subdivision of a preferred heading with all of its NTs. Thus, every preferred heading is a potential key heading for all of its NTs. This proposal works on the principle that what is true of a class is true of its narrower classes of all types. Applying this principle will enormously enhance the capacity of the List without adding even an iota to its text and size.

Abstract

Scope notes from Library of Congress Subject Headings are examined for 1) adherence to principles enunciated in the introduction to the list; 2) peculiarities of subject headings associated with such notes; 3) the structure of the notes; and 4) typical patterns associated with certain categories of subject headings. Scope notes are shown to enable catalogers to apply subject headings consistently and readers to distinguish related headings knowledgeably.

Abstract

Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and a review of the lists of subject headings in this language reveals numerous efforts over a period of time, usually involving some form of collaboration, but largely isolated from each other. Technological developments suggest that a greater degree of cooperation is now possible and would be beneficial to the international library community if other barriers can be surmounted. The lcsh-es.org project demonstrates this concept in a practical way and suggest a new model for international cooperation in authority control. The site may be accessed at http://lcsh-es.org.

Abstract

Pauline Cochrane and Monika Kirtland's "Critical views of LCSH-Library of Congress Subject Headings: a bibliographic and bibliometric essay" published in 'Cataloging & classification quarterly 1(1982) S.71-93' has been widely cited as a source for discussion and complaints about LCSH. Cochrane and Kirtland cover the literature from 1944-1979. The present work provides a critique of the Cochrane/Kirtland study and a survey of the literature concerning the LCSHs during the 1980s. The classified bibliography is arranged according to the format of the Cochrane/Kirtland study to facilitate comparison. Criticism of LCSH reiterates the same points over and over again, whether it is sparseness, bias or currency of the subject headings. Significant trends which emerged in the 1980s include an increased emphasis on the use of LCSH as an online searching tool, concern for the syndetic structure of LCSH and the role of subdivisions, as well as repeated calls for the development of coherent standards to ensure LCSH evolves and is applied in a consistent manner

"Das Deutsche Patent- und Markenamt informiert auf seiner Website unter www.dpma.de/veroeffentlichungen/mit teilungen/anlage_mittlg_16.pdf. (5 Seiten PDF-Format) über die zum 1. Januar 2007 in Kraft getretenen Änderungen der Internationalen Klassifikation von Waren und Dienstleistungen für die Eintragung von Marken (Klassifikation von Nizza). Änderungen für Dienstleistungen des Groß- und Einzelhandels in Klasse 35 waren bereits vorher erfolgt. Auf Basis des Urteils des EuGH vom 7. Juli 2005 C-418/02 ("Praktiker") (www. dpma.de/infos/einsteiger/einsteiger_ marke03b.html) ergaben sich einige Veränderungen bezüglich akzeptierter Formulierungen bei Markenanmeldungen in der Klasse 35. Was ist jetzt zulässig? Neben der vom EuGH ausdrücklich entschiedenen Formulierung wird das Deutsche Patent- und Markenamt im Vorgriff auf die am 1. Januar 2007 in Kraft tretende 9. Ausgabe der Klassifikation von Nizza eine Reihe weiterer Dienstleistungsbezeichnungen zulassen, die sachlich Bleichgelagert sind und nicht anders behandelt werden können als die Einzelhandelsdienstleistungen. Dazu gehören etwa - Großhandelsdienstleistungen mit ... - Einzelhandelsdienstleistungen für den Versandhandel mit ... - Dienstleistungen des Einzel-/Großhandels über das Internet mit ... - Einzelhandelsdienstleistungen mittels Teleshopping-Sendungen mit ... Was ist nach wie vor nicht zulässig? Alle Beteiligte in dem Verfahren vor dem EuGH sind davon ausgegangen, dass der reine "Verkauf" keine Dienstleistung darstellt, sondern mit der Warenmarke umfasst ist. Für Formulierungen wie "Verkauf", "Vertrieb", "Handel" kann daher nach wie vor keine Dienstleistungsmarke in Klasse 35 erlangt werden. Auch ist deutlich zu machen, dass Dienstleistungen für Dritte erbracht werden, deshalb sind Formulierungen wie "Betrieb eines Verkaufsgeschäfts...", "Betreiben eines Versandhandels..." nicht zulässig. In der Klasse 35 betreffen wesentliche Neuerungen die Klassen 14 und 42. Gebrauchsgegenstände "aus Edelmetall" werden künftig nicht mehr in der Klasse 14, sondern in der Klasse der Funktion klassifiziert; der Zusatz "aus Edelmetall/nicht aus Edelmetall" wird dadurch überflüssig. Die erstmals in der 9. Ausgabe so genannten "Juristischen Dienstleistungen" werden der Klasse 45 anstatt wie bisher der Klasse 42 zugeordnet."

Abstract

The 10th volume of the German series 'Forschritte der Wissensorganisation' (Advances in Knowledge Organization) with the title 'Compatibility, Media and Ethics in Knowledge Organization (Kompatibilität, Medien und Ethik in der Wissensorganisation)' consists of papers presented at the 10th German ISKO conference on Knowledge Organisation (Wissensorganisation 2006). As it was held 2006 in Vienna in conjunction with the 9th International ISKO conference (organized by the Centre for Translation Studies and the Institute for Educational Sciences), it contains many contributions in English as well as a number of supplementary publications of the International Conference. This explains why the Introduction and the Subject Index are in English. Also, every essay contains at least an English abstract. We would like to thank all the authors for submitting their elaborated papers. The 31 articles in this volume were assigned to seven chapters.
