- Abstract
- This article explains the concept of world view and shows how the world view of cataloguers influences the development and assignment of subject headings to works about other cultures and civilizations, using works from Classical literature and Ancient history as examples. Cataloguers are encouraged to evaluate the headings they assign to works in Classical literature and Ancient history in terms of the world views of Ancient Greece and Rome so that headings reflect the contents of the works they describe and give fuller expression to the diversity of thoughts and themes that characterize these ancient civilizations.

- Abstract
- The principle of specificity for subject headings provides a clear advantage to many researchers for the precision it brings to subject searching. However, for some researchers very specific subject headings hinder an efficient and comprehensive search. An appropriate broader heading, especially when made narrower in scope by the addition of subheadings, can benefit researchers by providing generic access to their topic. Assigning both specific and generic subject headings to a work would enhance the subject accessibility for the diverse approaches and research needs of different catalog users. However, it can be difficult for catalogers to assign broader terms consistently to different works and without consistency the gathering function of those terms may not be realized.

- Abstract
- In mid-1999, the University of Arkansas Libraries began loading MarciveGPO records into its Innovative Interfaces catalog. Pursuant to that activity, the Database Maintenance Unit examined five system-generated authority reports in order to evaluate the quality of Marcive headings and to determine whether future GPO records could be loaded into the catalog without further authority processing. Final results indicated that while the overall quality of Marcive headings was good, a significant percentage of headings that appeared on the authority reports required additional attention.

- Abstract
- Moving to a fully faceted syntax would resolve three problems facing Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH): 1. Inconsistent syntax rules; 2. Inability to create headings that are coextensive with the topic of a work; and 3. Lack of effective displays for long lists of subdivisions under a single subject heading in OPACs and similar electronic displays. The authors advocate a fully faceted syntax using the facets of a modern faceted library classification (The Bliss Bibliographic Classification, 2d ed.). They demonstrate how this might be accomplished so as to integrate the new syntax with existing headings.

- Abstract
- The shortcomings and limitations of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) are examined, focusing on problems of subject term specificity, inconsistent identification and selection of concepts as subject headings, retention of outmoded headings, inadequate cross-reference structure, and low level of indexing exhaustivity. These problems are attributable to both Cutter's Rules for a Dictionary Catalog (the theoretical model upon which LCSH are based), and the unsystematic manner in which LC has applied Cutter's Rules in constructing entries for its subject catalog. Methods of improving subject access in libraries, for both on-line and printed catalog environments, are discussed.

- Abstract
- Libraries using the LCSH can increase the effectiveness of their subject access. This can be accomplished through one of four methods for applying an increased number of headings: the addition of subject headings in situations where none have been supplied by LC; the use of pattern secondary headings; the use of major + minor techniques; and the use of minor + major techniques. Each of these methods will provide additional subject access to supplement that produced by the Library of Congress

- Abstract
- Cataloging and classification provide intellectual access for organizing resources in libraries. In New Zealand, bibliographic control is largely through the application of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). LCSH provide a sense of context and order. In Indigenous frameworks this sense of order can be found in the link between epistemology and knowledge structure. This article argues that the development and application of Maori subject headings is directly related to the natural order that is pivotal to a Maori worldview. The impact of this worldview and its associated values are explored in the context of the construction of Nga Upoko Tukutuku.

- The Michigan State University Libraries (MSUL) digital repository contains numerous collections of openly available material. Since 2016, the digital repository has been using Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST) subject headings as its primary subject vocabulary in order to streamline faceting, display, and search. The MSUL FAST use case presents some challenges that are not addressed by existing MARC-focused FAST tools. This paper will outline the MSUL digital repository team's justification for including FAST headings in the digital repository as well as workflows for adding FAST headings to Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) metadata, their maintenance, and utilization for discovery.

- Investigates the inadequacy of the 10th ed. of LCSH regarding Islamic subject headings and compares it with some of the schemes available in Arabic. Whilst LCSH is not entirely inadequate, in some subjects related to Islam there is room for improvement and expansion. The following subjects are covered in the comparison: Islam as a general heading, Quran, the Prophet Muhammad, Hadith, islamic law, prayer, and Muslim pilgrims and pilgrimages
